As an AI-powered identity verification and authentication platform, Veriff enables its Customers to confidently onboard and verify their End-Users. Achieving this level of assurance requires transparency in how Personal Data is handled. This document provides essential insight into the Data Processing Addendum and outlines Veriff's dual role as processor and independent data controller. Such a dual role allows Veriff to consistently detect fraud across our network, and ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of our Service. All capitalized terms in this article have the meaning given to them in Veriff’s Terms of Service and Data Processing Addendum.

Veriff’s role in data processing

Veriff primarily processes End-User Personal Data as a processor for the benefit of the Customer in order to provide our Service to our Customer. A processor functions as an entity responsible for handling and processing Personal Data on behalf of the controller, i.e., on behalf of our Customer.

The quality of the Service that Veriff is able to offer highly depends on the diversity and quantity of data the technology is trained on. Versatile training data leads to a more inclusive and less biased technology as well as greater accuracy and effectiveness in the operations and features of Veriff’s Services. Depending on the jurisdiction, and unless otherwise agreed between the parties in writing, Veriff takes on the role of an independent controller to achieve these purposes. Specifically, the main purpose of this is to elevate the quality of the Services provided to our Customers. This encompasses essential activities such as machine learning, data annotation, testing and training as well as activities aimed at fraud detection and prevention.

Key advantages for our Customer

1. Wider Reach, Greater Inclusivity and Reduced Bias: By leveraging diverse data sets, we aim to enhance the Service by better serving an even wider audience in an inclusive manner, which, in turn, can reduce algorithmic bias and promote fairness across all verification outcomes.

2. Precision and Accuracy: Diverse data usage enhances the accuracy of our Services. Each Customer agreeing to Veriff processing to train its technology can then receive more tailored, reliable and precise outcomes. This ensures that bad actors are kept at bay and genuine users experience minimal friction in their customer journey.

3. Efficiency Through Automation: Increased automation, made possible by diverse data sets, ensures a more efficient service delivery with faster response times.

4. Network-driven Enhancement of Protection: Diverse data sets allow Veriff to identify new, sophisticated, or multi-platform fraud attempts. You benefit from a level of fraud detection that a single company could not achieve on its own.

The Customer will remain in control

The scope of processing activities that Veriff carries out as an independent controller is described in the Permitted Business Purposes definition of the Data Processing Addendum. When Veriff undertakes such processing, the Customer's position as the primary decision-maker remains intact. Furthermore, the Customer has the option to opt-out at any time of Veriff using the collected data as a controller for Permitted Business Purposes. In order to do that, Enterprise Customers can contact their Account Manager, and Self Serve customers can send an email request to our Customer Support at support@veriff.com.

As applicable to the processing activities required for Service provision, the Customer remains responsible for ensuring a legal basis to support Veriff’s further processing as well. Furthermore, the Customer must ensure that the End-User is aware of the whole extent and scope of the data processing, and receives all relevant information as per applicable Data Protection Laws.

If you have further questions or would like to opt-out of Veriff using the data as an independent controller, please contact your Account Manager or our Customer Support via email support@veriff.com.

Innovation with reliability and responsibility

In summary, our Data Processing Addendum reflects Veriff's commitment to responsible innovation for a wider benefit. It's not merely about our operations; it's about aligning our Services with the Customers’ needs and the End-Users expectations. To ensure reliability, the Customer’s control is pivotal. We appreciate the trust our Customers place in us and remain dedicated to delivering an enhanced and tailored experience for a safer online environment.
